apu coll100 week 5 and week 6 discussions
In Week 1 Forum: Honor Code, we reviewedthe APUS Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism policy (2014). In Week 4, we explored the library and learned how to evaluate sources. This week we are spending time on documenting and citing research in order to maintain academic integrity in our academic work. You were asked to read the following article from the New York Times entitled “Plagiarism Lines Blur for Students in Digital Age” (2010, August 1).
In addition to the examples illustrated in the above article, what other types of events or situations are considered dishonest academic practices? Avoid repeating what your classmates have already shared. If necessary, search the internet for real events logged in the news or contact your instructor to get ideas. In your initial post, be sure to include:
- A type of event or situation that is considered academically dishonest?
- What makes this event or situation one that violates the APUS Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism policy?
- If a student is caught in this situation, how might this impact his or her academic career, professional career, orreputation in the local community? (Select one.)
Now switch roles. In responses to your classmates, pretend you are the poster's instructor, boss, or a community resident. Select your role based on the poster's initial scenario and his or her choice from item 3 above. From the perspective of your role, assess the scenario provided, determine if the event or situation violates APUS's Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism policy, and ask one question that extends the conversation. Potential questions could be: What did you hope to gain by x? How would your classmates, colleagues, or the volunteers react if they found out? Think of other questions that fit the scenario.
Directions
Respond to this forum using a minimum of 200 words by Thursday evening. Then, throughout the rest of the week come back into class and respond to at least two fellow learners by role-playing as described above. You are responsible for engaging with your classmates and continuing the role playing activity.

Part 1
Before moving into the discussion about energy management, take a moment to state again for us your degree program. Which documentation style does your program require? Even though your program uses a specific documentation style, you will take classes from multiple disciplines that use different styles. For example, you might be an history major during which you will use Chicago/Turabian style, but in this course we are using APA, and in a literature course, you will be asked to use MLA.
For Part 1, address the following items:
- State your discipline of study
- Identify the documentation style used in the above discipline? (The link is provided in the Lesson)
- How do you plan to manage these different document styles? What resources do you have available to you to help you work with all of the styles? Aim to share a resource different than your classmates'.
Part 2
This week's Lesson includes information about energy management. At this point in the term, how are you feeling? Are you motivated to complete the final project? Are you dreading the final project? What strategy or strategies are you using to stay motivated through these last couple of weeks? Have you sought out a community of learners in the Quad or explored communities in Clear Path? Are you still excited about your program of study? Have you explored APUS's Career Services?
Reply to three (3) classmates. Here are some possible conversation starters:
- Find someone in the class who is on The Quad or Clear Path and is participating in an APUS community. Do you or your classmate use these communities to get to know other people? What is the benefit to visiting the Quad and Clear Path?
- Or find a classmate who is studying the same program as you are or studying in the same School (School of Business, for example). Do you share the same excitement, apprehension, or questions?
- Ask about your classmates' annotated bibliography--do they have questions that you might be able to answer?
