Model 6: Analyze an advertisement, preferably a television commercial. Describe the advertisement. Who is the intended audience? Does the advertisement attempt to activate central route or peripheral route processing? What are the major persuasive communication techniques used in the message? How effective do you believe the advertisement is?
Module 7: Think about a time in which someone used the “foot in the door” technique, the “door in the face technique,” or the “psychological reactance” technique on you. What method did they use? Describe the situation. Were you influenced to comply; why or why not? Discuss.
Module 8: Many classes require an in-class group project. When you have worked as a member of an in-class group project or worked in other group situations, have you noticed any social loafing? What happened? Why do you think it occurred? Does it seem to occur more in males than females as the text suggests? If so, why do you think?
Module 9: What do you think about the theories of love proposed by the text and lecture slides? Which theory do you like the best and why? Which theory do you like the least and why?
Module 10: Please answer one of the two discussion questions below:
(1) Describe a recent situation in which you were helpful to someone in need. Which of the factors discussed in the text (e.g., guilt, sympathy, reward, a good mood, empathy, etc.) probably affected your behavior?
(2) Have you been in an emergency situation (as the victim, observer, or helper) in which bystanders were involved? What factors discussed in Latane and Darley’s(1970) model of bystander intervention seemed to play a role?
