The article being presented for critical review and discussion this week is a descriptive prospective cohort study that examined the risk factors for inadequate nutrition support among critically ill patients. Access the Kiel, et al. (2020) Journal Club article from American Sentinel’s ProQuest electronic database.  To critically review and appraise this Cohort Study, use the Cohort Studies Appraisal Tool from CASP, which is listed in the Resource section on the Module 3 Overview page. Discuss the merits and limitations of this research study with an emphasis on the results and discussion sections.  After reviewing this article, consider the reason why cohort studies are considered the Gold Standard for disease causation and why it is important that these studies are conducted using a rigorous process.

(2020) article being presented this week for discussion examines the gaps between current clinical practice and evidence-based guidelines for treatment and care of older patients with community acquired pneumonia  To determine the merits and limitations of this study, download and use the Rapid Research Appraisal tool.

To determine the merits and limitations of the Aziz et al. (2020) study, download and use the Rapid Research Appraisal tool to critique and score this article.  As you critically review this study for quality, consider why the research is important, how the information adds to the current body of nursing knowledge, whether your appraisal scores are significantly different from your peers, and how the differences in scores impact the reliability of the review.

Module 6 Discussion

The study presented this week by Naylor et al. (2019) is a geospatial analysis. Using geospatial information systems software, is an effective way of analyzing large amounts of aggregate population-level data and visually depicting it so the reader can place the problem in geographic context.  For this journal club, you do not need to critically evaluate the quality of the study; instead, discuss the implications of using spatial analysis in nursing and provide one recommendation for a study utilizing this analytic approach.

For your final discussion this week, you are to assume the role of Journal Club presenter by locating an article of interest to you and presenting it for discussion.  Using the skills you have developed in this class, present a brief synopsis of your article including your opinion of the quality of the study. Pose one or more questions to your peers to prompt a meaningful discussion of your study.  In addition, respond to the postings of two other student’s presentations of their journal club articles. Upload your journal club article, as an attachment, or provide a link so others can access the article. Include a full reference of the article in your initial post.
