Everyone had a personal life with the least intrusion by strangers. People complimented each other and shared thing over mail. Till 20th-century social networking hardly had a global reach. The 21st century witnessed a lot of revolutions, one such include ‘Facebook’. Know more about who invented Facebook and the whole story behind it.

The invention of the most popular social networking site by Mark Zuckerberg

In the year 2003, a computer science student at Harvard named Mark Zuckerberg came up with an idea. Along with his classmates Eduardo Saverin, Dusting Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes, he invented ‘facemash’. Being computer students, they all were well-versed with software. Mark managed to breach Harvard’s security data and copied the photos of students from their ID’s used by dormitories. The users could use the site to compare two student’s pictures and rate them as ‘hot’ or ‘not’.

Later, the site was shut down by the Harvard authorities as Mark faced serious charges for the breach of security and violating privacy.

In the year 2004, he launched a new website named ‘The Facebook’. He engaged in a dispute with his seniors, who accused him of stealing their idea of ‘Harvard connection’. The lawsuit was somehow settled. Later, Zuckerberg, along with his classmates, tried to expand his site to other universities.

The Evolution of Facebook

In 2005, the name of the most popular social networking site changed to ‘Facebook’. Mark purchased the domain name facebook.com for $200,000. In 2006, anyone of age at least 13yrs, with a valid email address could sign up at Facebook. By 2009, it emerged out as the world’s most used social networking site. (Source: Compete.com)

The generosity of Mark surfaced when he donated $100 million to the New Jersey public school system. Later, he, alongside his wife Chan donated $25 million towards fighting for the Ebola virus.

Until now, they’ve donated 99% of Facebook’s earning to the Chan Zuckerberg initiative to improve thousands of lives. The initiative led to the development of education, health, scientific research, and energy.

Facebook estimated that almost 2.4 billion people use Facebook for nearly 42 minutes on an everyday basis. The compliments have turned to likes, and people connect over long distances. The pictures get posted and shared. Due to its global connectivity, it’s gaining popularity day-by-day.
