The Untold History of French Fries
Historians claim that their delicacy, French fries may not be a French creation but a Belgian one. In the late 1600s, potatoes were being fried in Belgium. Belgian villagers sliced their fishes into thin pieces, fried them and ate as a snack. But in winter, the river would freeze, and it got difficult for the villagers to get the fish. As an alternative, they started to slice potatoes the same way and fried them. And our beloved French fries were created.
During World War One, American soldiers tried this fried delicacy for the first time and immediately fell in love with it. Since the language of southern Belgium is French, they entitled them as “French” fries, and the name got popular thereon. This name thing ignited a heated argument between France and Belgium.
