Different-Types-of-Solutions

Different Types of Solutions | Chemistry Homework Help

Did you know, the major things around you contains solutions. From the drinks that you’re sipping, the deodorant you apply, sugar, salt, etc., everything is made up of solutions. It is a mixture of two or more substances mixed to form a single solution to define the term solution. Solute and solvent are a part of the solution, which combines to form a homogeneous mixture. There are different types of solutions with their distinct properties. In this guide, you’ll learn about these solution types and their examples.

Characteristics of Solutions

To better understand the types of solutions, it is important to read through their characteristics.

  • The solution is a homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances
  • After the formation of a solution, the solute cannot be separated using filtration.
  • A beam of light cannot pass through a solution.
  • A solution is stable and consists of only a single phase.

The Formation of a Solution: A Physical Process

To help you better understand the formation of a solution, here is a physical process with an example. The solute and solute combine through a physical process and forms a solution. For example, ceramic and polymer blends.

Types of Solutions

The solubility of Solute in Solvent

Here are different types of solutions based on the solubility of a solute in the solvent.

Supersaturated Solution

It is a large amount of solute at a temperature, which will be reduced; thus, the extra solute will crystallize.

Unsaturated Solution

It is a solution in which a solvent can dissolve any more solute at a given temperature.

Saturated Solution

It is a solution in which a solvent is incapable of dissolving any more solute at a given temperature.

Solvent to be Water or Not

Based on the presence of water as a solvent in a solution, two solution types exist.

Aqueous Solution

These are the type of solutions that have water as a solvent.

E.g.:- sugar in water, carbon dioxide in water, etc.

Non-aqueous Solution

These are the type of solutions that doesnt have water as a solvent. Rather, it has ether, benzene, petrol, carbon tetrachloride, etc.

E.g.:- Sulfur in carbon disulphide, naphthalene in benzene

Solute Added to a Solvent

Based on the addition of solute in a solvent, there are two types of solutions.

Dilute Solution

A dilute solution is one that has a small amount of solute in a large amount of solvent.

E.g.:- Salt solution, light color tea, etc.

Concentrated Solution

A concentrated solution has large amounts of solute in the given solvent.

E.g.:- Orange juice, Brine solution, Dark tea, etc.
