What is the United Nations?

United Nations is an inter-governmental organization founded on October 24, 1945. It is responsible for maintaining international peace and security and developing friendly relations between different countries. Its headquarters are in New York, and its main offices are in Geneva, Vienna, The Hague, and Nairobi.

It currently has 193 member countries. The United Nations has six principal organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the International Court of Justice, the Economic, and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, and the UN Secretariat. It is the most powerful intergovernmental organization. It is composed of many specialized agencies, such as the World Bank, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and UNESCO. Job With the United Nations

First of all, you must know the staff division in jobs at the United Nations. There are two kinds of staff in UN agencies -General Service Staff and Professional Staff. So, you have to decide what type of staff you want to join. There are various levels under these like G1, G2, P1, P2, and so on.

The general service is related to secretaries, technician maintenance staff, and so on. Here the recruitment is mainly for station duties. They have a fixed-term job. While Professional staff mainly includes scientists, senior technicians, engineers, translators, and more, their tenure of the job in the United Nations as a professional staff is limited to several years. Young graduates can often start as professional service staff.

To join the United Nations as an employee, you must have the following:

  • Since English and French are the standard working languages, you must have excellent command in English or French.
