We will continue working with the data set you created for Unit I. If it was created successfully, you may use the histogram and summary statistics you generated for that project as well. Place a copy of the histogram and summary statistics in your project document.

  1. Does your data appear normally distributed? In your response, comment on the shape of the distribution of your data and compare your measures of central tendency (mean, median).
Aligns with Lesson 6, objective 1: Recognize the normal distribution.
  2. How closely does your data obey the empirical rule? Do roughly 68% of your data points fall within one standard deviation of the mean? Do roughly 95% of your data points fall within two standard deviations of the mean? Make sure to read the lecture notes to see how this is done if you are unsure.
Aligns with Lesson 6, objective 1: Recognize the normal distribution.
  3. Create a normality probability plot with software. Make an appropriate interpretation of the results based on your readings of a normality probability plot in the text.
Aligns with Lesson 6, objective 1: Recognize the normal distribution.
  4. Assume that your population being studied is normally distributed. If all your findings from questions one through three suggested a non-normal distribution, temporarily ignore those findings and imagine that your population of study is normally distributed.
  5. Also assume the mean and standard deviation from your sample are approximately close to the true population mean and population standard deviation. Using the mean and standard deviation you calculated, calculate a Z-score and find the probability of the values occurring in another state’s county listed below. (Note: You’re only finding the probability that corresponds with your data set. If you chose to do a data set outside the ones provided, contact your instructor).
Aligns with Lesson 6, objective 2: Compute areas (probabilities) under the normal curve.
  6. For whichever variable you chose to study, find the value of the variable that corresponds to the tenth percentile. In other words, find the z-score for 10% or less, then use the z-score formula to find the value that corresponds to 10%. Does this value seem realistic when considering what your variable measures?
