Week 6: Jesus and the Kingdom of God

Describe some of the values Jesus had in mind when he used the phrase "Kingdom of God." One scholar has called Jesus's message "ethical apocalypticism." What do you think this means in light of our discussion of apocalypticism in the text? (You might want to relate this to the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:1-12.)

Beatitudes and Blessings

All: "Beatitudes" comes from the Latin word for "blessings" and is the common title for this section from the famous Sermon on the Mount of Jesus in Matthew 5:1-12. In other words, these are the blessings in the Kingdom of God. What are some of the values expressed here? Do the values expressed in these Beatitudes apply to an invisible kingdom, a visible kingdom or both?

Share something you found in the textbook readings and from your own research in an outside scholarly source and include them in your initial response to the prompt, with proper citations.

Week 6: Old and the New

Reflect on the reading and explain one of the key differences between the Old Testament and the New Testament. How do these differences influence the way that Christianity is practiced today? Focus your response on one example that you can deconstruct using the reading for this week and the knowledge you have accumulated in the course.

New Testament

All: Since the Old Testament for Christians is the Hebrew Bible, and Christian writers added the New Testament, good sections to review in Molloy (2013) for background to respond to this prompt are Chapter 8, pages 285-301, and Chapter 9, pages 336-352. You’ll be able to find key ideas in the Old Testament and the New Testament there. Christians use both testaments equally.

An important concept in understanding religions is understanding the content of their holy books, since that is where their teachings primarily come from.

You only need one example for this initial prompt. Feel welcome to use any examples from your own understanding and experience, too, or asking someone who you think has some good ideas on this and sharing their perspective.

In looking at the way Christianity is practiced today, you can use the eight elements of religion to guide your thinking. Remember those from Week 1? They are beliefs, stories, rituals, ethics, material expression, community, emotional experiences, sacredness.

Week 6: Field Trip Report

For this class you are required to visit a religious site not your own. This could be a synagogue, a Christian church, a mosque, or a temple. The purpose of this trip is to report on what you saw -normally a religious service—and how it compares to your own religious upbringing and/or current practice.

The report should give a description of the site and a detailed summary of the religious service. As part of your assignment you should:

· Describe what you observed. What were the material expressions of the service (statues, paintings, music, etc). Was there anything special going on that day (e.g., baptisms)? If there was a sermon, analyze it.

· Provide a cultural and historical context for what you saw/experienced. What information from your textbook and research provides information about and contextualizes your experience? What are some of the historical roots of your experience? What parts seem more contemporary?

· Conclude with your personal reaction to this experience and any questions you had about your experience.

This paper should be at least three (3) pages in length (1500 words) with proper APA formatting. This includes proper documentation. This is a formal academic paper so pay careful attention to the basics of writing a good English composition.

Don't forget to submit your assignment.

HISTORY

Week 6: The End of the Cold War

7

What impact did Mikhail Gorbachev's ideas of glasnost (openness), perestroika (restructuring) and demokratizatsiia (democratization) have on Communist society? Were these principles compatible with collectivization and a command economy? Did Communist leaders favor these principles or did they feel that their hand were tied once they were introduced into Communist society?

Week 6: The not so Cold War

66 unread replies.66 replies.

It would be easy to dismiss the Cold War simply as proof that Capitalism was a better theory than Communism. Easy, but not the whole story. In order for Communism to be relegated to the dustbin of history, it first had to be proven that its struggle against Capitalism unecessary and thus irrelevant. How do the US and the USSR close the gap in the last quarter of the 20th Century to allow Communism to go out with a whimper and not a bang?

Week 6: Case Study: Ho Chi Minh and Vietnamese Independence

Was Ho Chi Minh a Communist? To many Americans he was. But to many Vietnamese he was a nationalist hero, and to even a few Americans he was that as well, plus a friend, and ally and a comrade in arms during World War 2. It may be hard to paint Ho with any color other than gray, and now, nearly 50 years after his death and 40 years after the end of the American war in Vietnam, even that color has faded with time. What we do have are his words.

The link below will take you the speech Ho Chi Minh gave on September 2, 1945, in which he proclaimed Vietnam's independence, and its arrival on the world stage.

In 2-3 pages, address the following:

1. Minh's speech proclaiming Vietnam's independence contains a demand that the free world support that independence in part as payment for services rendered during World War 2. What 'service' did Vietnam render during that conflict?

2. Minh claimed that Vietnam's independence is consistent with the philosophical principles which the Allies claimed were paramount during World War 2. What principles was Minh referring to, and did he make references to occasions where those principles were reasserted?

3. In the speech, Minh mentioned crimes committed by the French during their occupation of Vietnam. Which crimes, as you read them, were in your opinion most severe and justified Vietnamese independence?
