THIS IS THE ESSAY TOPIC:

Research Topic: “History Turning Points”
General Overview: Select an event, incident, a legislative action, or related marked historical moment in the years from Reconstruction until today that marks an important transition in American History. This historical event can lead to a social, economic, or political transition that shaped the country's history. Additionally, you will conclude this research project with a supposition of how history might have been shaped had this event never occurred or of another possible outcome could have been possible.
Examples: How did the new technology of WWI change modern warfare? What could have been the possible benefits and problems if the Freedman's Bureau continued beyond Reconstruction?

Research Objectives & Questions to be Discussed in Your Essay: (Incorporate these questions in the writing of your essay.)

* Why did you select this event?
* What were both the short- and long-term effects of this historical event?
* Who all were impacted/affected by this historical event?
* How was history changed by this event?
* If you were to imagine a different outcome or reaction to your event, what do you suppose might have been a different outcome in the short- and long-term?

General Essay Requirements
Completed essays must follow these formatting requirements:
All papers should be at least a minimum of 4 written pages, with no maximum page count.  (Approximate minimum word count 1000-1200 words)
Double-spaced
Acceptable fonts (no larger than 12 pt.): Times New Roman, Arial, Garamond, or Book Antiqua
1” maximum margins on top, bottom, right and left
There should be NO headers (paper title, student name, course, date, instructor, etc.) on ANY page that includes written essay-body text.  Any header information, if desired but not required, should ONLY be on a title page (however a title page is not required).
Sources (citations in text and Works Cited/Bibliography):
All of your sources must be accounted for in your text, using either endnotes or footnotes only (parenthetical reference not permitted).
Students must use either footnotes or endnotes for in-text citations, but not a mixture of both.  Be consistent throughout the paper.  Footnote and endnote citations also do count in final paper page/word count
You must use at least five (5) sources that you will be using in the final writing of your paper.
The essay should have a MINIMUM of two (2) primary sources. two (2) secondary sources, and one (1) image source (primary if possible).
If the image is a primary source, it is not included in the two primary source requirement.  Internet sources should be avoided unless they are from academic sources.
ALL internet sources must be approved by the instructor, and failure to gain approval will result in not receiving credit for those included sources in this assignment as well as in the final bibliography with the paper.
Primary or Secondary Source Image/s:
Your images should be either embedded in the essay text as a wrapped object or included on a separate page.  If wrapped, please consider that amount of essay text that is being displaced by the image and compensate that displacement by insuring that the proper page length/word requirement is met in additional pages.
Each image MUST be supported by an analysis in a caption.  The caption DOES contribute to word count of the final essay project (suggested caption word count: 50-100 words)
Bibliography/Works Cited page:
Should be included and is separated on its own page at end of paper
Each paper should be accompanied by a Bibliography/Works Cited page with correct format for all sources used in the paper.
The required citation method for this course is the Turabian/Chicago citation method.  (Please see the link titled How to Create Citations & Bibliography using the Turabian/Chicago Method in Essay Project > Essay Formatting & Helpful Links > Helpful Links for Completing Your Paper)
The Bibliography/Works Cited page DOES NOT count in total required page count of the essay Assignment.

Grading Rubric
Formatting: Paper is formatted correctly, does not include headers in written text, nor utilizes excessively large margins, paper is double-spaced and demonstrates clear organization in the form of paragraph breaks.
Image 0-5 points: Paper includes at least one appropriate image relevant to the research topic, and the image is properly captioned explaining its relevance to the essay.

Paper is properly cited using either footnotes or endnotes.  Includes a properly formatted Works Cited/Bibliography.  Demonstrates agreement between documented sources and citations in the essay text.
Essay Content 0-50 points: Paper content is well-written, organized, has a strong introduction with a clear thesis statement, and is concluded with a summarization of research findings.  Paper shows editing, lacking excessive spelling and grammatical errors.
Deductions to your essay grade include, but are not limited to: (please note, these are automatic deductions from the first overall viewing of the essay before it is read and will be applied first to your score; the quality of the actual written paper will then be scored from the remaining points if any of the following deductions are made)

Finding Your Sources
Per the paper requirements, you must have at least 5 sources, and one image source.  Of the non-image sources, at least 2 of these must be primary sources and it is recommended that your image also be a primary source.  Any other sources you use can be secondary, but not tertiary (this would be your textbook or any other history textbook)!  Also, be sure to look at the list at the bottom of this post for online sources are not acceptable.

Primary vs. Secondary Sources
Hunting for your sources:
            •           For primary sources, there are thousands of online repositories for nearly any history subject.  I recommend doing a web search using phrasing such as "WWI primary sources," with just replacing "WWI" with your topic choice.
            •           In the image for my search below, you can see several good sources for documents and images, any of which would be a great place to start browsing.  If you are using Google, you can also click on the Images link to find only images for your tip

            •           For finding great secondary sources, I recommend using the CVC Library Databases
            •           Really, for most historical research, the best place to find a good deal of reputable secondary sources is by navigating to the JSTOR Collection on the CVC Library Databases site. (See first image below)
            •           Additionally, JSTOR will also create/show you how to cite that source properly

            •           Sources that are not acceptable for this project (or any college-level history research project):
            •           Wikipedia
            •           khanacademy.com
            •           History.com
            •           Britannica.com
