Assignment 3: Types of Web Pages

While the history of the web protocol on the Internet can be organized in many ways, one option is to summarize the development of web infrastructure.

Phase 1: Static Web Pages. html Typed Code Based. The Push Internet

In the beginning of the World Wide Web web pages were static and much like a published book or magazine. Each visitor to a webpage saw the same content as every other visitor. One clicked through web pages much like one would browse through book pages. Visiting the WWW was like visiting a library. One advantage the web had over a library was that the pages could be consumed in any order of choice by following hyperlinks and of course you did not need to pull books off a library shelf.

Phase 2: Dynamic Web Pages. LAMP Based. The Pull Internet

The Web eventually developed an infrastructure known as LAMP that supported dynamic, customized and interactive web pages. Now visitors could provide information such as personal preferences and page content would change based on the visitor. For instance, no one sees the same Facebook page or Amazon page. Based on user information each Facebook page is dynamically customized.

Phase 3: Computational Web Pages. Cloud Based. The Internet of Things

Cloud computing generally refers to the practice of using the internet to perform tasks that were previously done on a local computer. Google Docs is a cloud based word processor as compared to Microsoft Word which is a computer based word processor. The cloud stores, manages, performs calculations and processes data on the Internet rather than a personal computer. In the past organizations would maintain a large supply of computers and storage in a building to support company goals. Now more and more organizations are just renting cloud computing resources as needed on the Internet.Read this brief NY Times article on the current state of cloud computing.

To Receive Credit for this Assignment

Part 1: Static Web

  1. Locate some static web page that remains constant for every user. Some blogs and other simple web pages are static.

Part 2: Dynamic Web

  1. Go to some dynamic website such as YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, Canvas, MyBiola etc. (The requirement for a dynamic web page is that the page is customized for a specific user.)
  2. Field is the computer term for the information storage areas uses customized information for a web page. For instance when you type in your name in a web page you are using a name field.
  3. Look at the content on the dynamic web page. Create a list of the fields that are customized (unique to the page) based on a user, location, time, purchase history, etc. You should create a list of at least 20 fields. For example on a Facebook page there would be fields for post content, poster's name, person tags, location, photos, emoticons, comments, likes, ratings, etc. and this is just one part of a Facebook page. An Amazon page would have fields for the product title, author, price, rental price, reviews, ISBN, description, publisher, language, etc.

Part 3: Cloud Web

  1. Google Docs is an example of the Cloud web. A web page (Google Doc) now imitates a word processor by utilizing cloud resources. For years office software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.) was stored on a local computer. Now it can be done on the Internet with a browser because of cloud infrastructure.
  2. Amazon Web Services is the largest cloud computer service. Other companies rent computer resources from Amazon as needed.
  3. Click here for a list of companies that rent their computing infrastructure from Amazon. Watch the video for at least one case study.
  4. Canvas, the Learning Management System used at Biola, runs on Amazon Cloud.Click here to watch Canvas' case study.
  5. Click here for a longer list of AWS companies.

On Canvas turn in the following written document that includes;

  • Write a short essay (300 words) that summarizes what you learned about web infrastructure phases and the differences between static, dynamic and cloud web pages. (These are not discrete categories and overlap extensively but hopefully you get the point that there are different types of web pages. Generally comment on the evolution of web pages.)
  • Include your list of 20 custom fields that change on the dynamic web page of your choice.
  • Note one or two companies that you were surprised to find use Amazon Web Services (AWS) and write a paragraph why you think they use AWS. What are the advantages of using AWS over maintaining your own infrastructure.
