1. Identify a topic related to the history of kinesiology that interests you.
2. Research the topic. Identify at least 4 academic sources that address the topic from a historical perspective. You can use course readings, but they do not count toward the 4 academic sources your must identify.
3. Write a short essay on the topic. It should include the following sections:
a. Introduction
b. Kinesiology Narrative: It could pertain to big issues such as health, wellness, or the value of physical activity or it could pertain to something more specific such as the meaning of the Super Bowl or the advent of modern dance. Remember that for KIN 305 “kinesiology” should be broadly understood which means you can focus on anything related to physical activity. You should select a topic that is meaningful to you. It is important that you clearly identify and explain your narrative. You will need to clearly explain what the narrative is and why it is important.
c. Historical Context of the Narrative: You must identify the historical context of the narrative. Possible questions to consider: What factors led to the emergence of this story? Who was responsible for telling this story? How has this story changed or developed over time? But these are just some examples you may want to use to frame your narrative. You may want to express it in other ways. However, make sure that you present some meaningful historical context that informs the narrative. This section will require doing some research, finding historical sources, and interpreting those sources to present the historical context of your narrative.
d. Contemporary Context of the Narrative: You will conclude with an analysis of how this narrative is relevant or important today. Is it a good, compelling story? Why or why not? Is it problematic? If so, why? Is it widely shared or suppressed or for a select group? Will this narrative continue to be relevant? Does this story need to be told differently? If so, how? These are just some examples you may want to consider when identifying the contemporary context of your chosen narrative.
e. Conclusion
f. Bibliography (immediately at the end of the essay, not a separate page)
