Political scientists speak of "party realignment" when there is a considerable shift in in the electoral coalitions (the different groups of voters) that support the major parties. As you can imagine, recent developments (most notably the presumptive nomination of Donald Trump as the Republican's presidential candidate) have sparked a debate about the near future of the US party system and potential realignments.
