Report due: February 1, 2016 10AM – WRITE UP THIS LAB INDEPENDENTLY
Background
Quite often in engineering practice, you will collect data on system performance, or as a needs
assessment to determine the best approach to a problem. A difficult task for the engineer is to
correctly interpret such data. This is complicated by the fact that automatic/digital data
acquisition can produce large volumes of numbers. Statistical analysis techniques are often used
to aid in data interpretation and understanding in order to allow the responsible parties to make
appropriate decisions based on the data.
There are college courses in statistics which you can take if you want more information on
appropriate analyses for particular data sets; we will NOT be attempting to learn statistics in this
lab. BUT: we will learn some very simple descriptive statistics and how to interpret and apply
them.
In this experiment, you will collect data and then, using appropriate statistical analysis, reach
conclusions based on the data. A spreadsheet program (Excel) will be used to analyze and the
plot the data
The statistical analysis techniques used will include:
Determination of means (average) and median values and when to use them
Determination of Standard Deviation – what does it tell you?
Generation of Histograms
Generation of graphs relating one variable to another
Plot the independent variable on the horizontal axis and the dependent variable on
the vertical axis
Evaluate the relationship between these variables using a regression (linear)
Determine the correlation coefficient (R2
) for the curve
Our silly research question:
What are the relationships between height, weight, biceps circumference, shoe size, gender, age
and cash carried for EDSGN100 students?
Procedure
Collect the following data as instructed:
1. Your height, in inches
2. Your weight, in lbs.
3. Biceps circumference
4. Your shoe size (use “US” system)
5. Your age, in years
6. Your gender (male, female)
7. Amount of cash in your pockets/purse/wallet right now
Record your data on the Data Sheet (last page of this handout), then tear off the data sheet and
turn in to the instructor. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE DATA SHEET.
Statistical Analysis
Descriptive Statistics
1. Report mean and median values for all values except gender
2. Report standard deviations for all values except gender
Histograms
Generate histograms for:
Weight of Students
Height of Students
Age of Students
Gender
Cash carried by students
Correlation / regression
Generate curves for:
Height vs. Weight (use height as the horizontal axis (independent variable)
Height vs. Shoe size (use height as the horizontal axis (independent variable)
Height vs. Cash (use height as the horizontal axis (independent variable)
Calculate the regression equations for the three graphs above, including the correlation
coefficients
Discussion
“Interpret” your data. [I know this isn’t very interesting data, but tell me what the values are and
if they are different from what you expected.] Values to discuss: means and/or medians; standard
deviations, correlation coefficients (R2
). Address each ‘question’.
What conclusions can you draw from these data? Which parameters correlate (that is, which of
the correlation coefficients indicate a correlation)? Does the correlation “make sense” (that is,
would you expect this relationship based on your personal experiences)?

to the nearest 1/8”
4. What is your Shoe Size? If half size, please use .5, not

5. What is your age to the closest year? (no fractions)
6. What is your gender (choose one – use the letter)
