Annotated Bibliography Assignment

Purpose: One of the first steps in any research project is to explore the literature to learn background information about your topic and determine the state of the science in your research area- what has been done before and what are the questions that still remain in the field. When you are looking for information on your research area you will likely use keyword to search the literature and online resources. Once you find a source of information, you will evaluate whether or not it is useful to your research topic as well as the reliability and accuracy of the information based on the nature of the source.

Assignment

Part A:

Find at least ten (10+) sources of information that are useful for your research project. These references may provide general background information, comparable data sets, theory, etc. Save these sources using Zotero. In a Word document, list the three (3) sources of information which you think are likely to be the most helpful from among the documents you found. Provide the information below about EACH of the three sources.
  • Explain how you found each source. Include any keywords you used for searching.
  • What kind(s) of information scource is this – websites, publications (books, journal articles), professional/personal, etc.?

3) In the Word document, also provide the information below about EACH of the three (3) sources.

  • State the type of information you found in EACH source.
  • How reliable is this information? Can you trust it to be accurate? WHY?

Part B:

1) Construct a bibliography using your 10+ information sources following the style used by the geosciences journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters http://www.elsevier.com/journals/earth-and-planetary-science-letters/0012-821X/guide-for-authors#68000 .

2) Add key information, insights, and questions regarding each source in your bibliography to create an annotated bibliography.

Example:

Elwood Madden ME, Kring DA, Bodnar RJ (2006) Shock reequilibration of fluid inclusions in Coconino Sandstone from Meteor Crater, Arizona. Earth and Planetary Science Letters 241, 32-46.

Compares fluid inclusions in unshocked Coconino Sandstone to inclusions within shocked samples of Coconino SS from Meteor Crater to determine the fate of fluid inclusions in shocked materials. Classified shocked rocks based on Keiffer’s method and found that fluid inclusions stretch, then decrepitate, and finally are destroyed with increasing shock metamorphism.

May help explain why there aren’t many fluid inclusions in meteorites.

Has this been done with other rock types?

Found Kieffer’s methods here:

S.W. Kieffer, Shock metamorphism of the Coconino sandstone at Meteor Crater, Arizona, J. Geophys. Res. 76 (1971) 5449– 5473.
