Case Study:  Pelican Stores Promotional OpportunitiesPelican Stores, a division of National Clothing, is a chain of women’s apparel stores operating throughout the country.  The chain recently ran a promotion in which discount coupons were sent to customers of other National Clothing Stores (but not to customers specifically of Pelican Stores).  Data collected for a sample of 100 in-store credit card transactions at Pelican Stores during one day while the promotion was running are contained in the file named “StatsI – Case Study – Clothing Store Data.xls” (which has been attached to this assignment).  When reviewing the data, please note that the “proprietary card” method of payment refers to charges made using a National Clothing charge card.  Customers who made a purchase using a discount coupon are referred to as “promotional” customers; and customers who made a purchase but did not use a discount coupon are referred to as “regular” customers.  Because the promotional coupons were not sent to regular Pelican Stores customers, management considers the sales made to people presenting the promotional coupons as sales it would not otherwise make.  Of course, Pelican also hopes that the promotional customers will continue to shop at its stores. Most of the variables in the excel data file are self-explanatory, but I will clarify them just in case."Customer" is a auto-numbering field to count the number of customers in the study (this is not used in analysis)."Type of Customer" is a customer that either is a regular shopper (regular) or came to the store specifically because of the promotion being held (Promotional).“Items” refers to the total number of items purchased.“Net Sales” refers to the total amounts ($) charged to one of the credit cards."Method of Payment" refers to a Discover Card, Visa Card, MasterCard, or theProprietary Card, which is essentially the store's credit card (e.g., Macy's, JC Penny, Kohls, etc.)Gender - Male or FemaleMarital Status - Married or SingleAge - Number in yearsPelican’s management would like to use this sample data to learn about its customer base and to evaluate the promotion involving discount coupons. Please choose methods of statistical analysis discussed in class (at least through Chapter 3) to summarize the data and comment on your findings.  Your report should be written as though you were assessing the data for the Pelican management team (i.e. correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation are just as important as statistical accuracy). You will use charts, graphs, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, or any other method you see fit to completely dissect the data and provide Pelican management with information about the customers. It is recommended to compare Regular customers with Promotional customers to see a difference in buying habits and demographic information. You are using data to determine the type and buying habits of your new customers due to the Promotion, but you need to understand your regular customers type and buying habits to understand the impact of the promotion.Your final report should include information and analysis in a report form to the company. This should be written in a way that the company can read the report, understand your position, and easily understand your recommendations going forward.
