Thomas Hobbes claims that Leviathan must have absolute political authority, and that it is impossible for Leviathan to act unjustly toward the subjects of a commonwealth. Why does Hobbes make these two claims? Why does he think it is reasonable for subjects to obey even an absolute sovereign? How successfully does he resolve the concern that the sovereign might harm its subjects?
