At the very roots of weight regulation is the simplest of concepts—to maintain a given weight energy intake must be equal to energy output. If excessive calories are consumed or if the energy expenditure is minimized, a weight gain will result. Alternatively, a reduction in calorie consumption or increase in energy expenditure results in a loss of body weight. Yet for all the simplicity, an obesity epidemic has swept the nation as many Americans struggle in their attempts to lose weight.

Based on current research findings, do you support the notion that energy balance is a simple concept? Why or why not?

From a public health perspective, what might be done to help reverse the trend of obesity? Consider the various determinants and influences of weight. Which of these have a practical application at the population level?

Discuss two barriers to changing behaviors related to consuming a healthy diet and getting adequate physical activity that should be addressed in public health programs aimed at reducing obesity.

Obese individuals are often stigmatized for their weight. It is said that weight stigmatization or bias is the last socially acceptable form of discrimination in society. Weight bias takes on a variety of forms including teasing and discrimination in the workplace and may include feelings that obese people are indulgent, lazy, sloppy, or lacking personal responsibility. Several studies have supported the notion that weight bias is pervasive among physicians and other healthcare professionals leading to alterations in the quality of care that obese people receive. Weight bias has the potential to negatively influence an obese individual's health in many ways.

According to current research findings, what is the impact of weight bias and stigmatization on the health and weight loss efforts of obese individuals?

How could obesity prevention efforts reduce the risk of interventions increasing weight bias, stigmatization, and body dissatisfaction?

What should be the role of the church and faith-based coalitions in preventing obesity and reducing weight bias
