Example

Name of Theory: Stimulus Response Theory

Description: The Stimulus Response (SR) Theory is based on the idea that behavior is shaped by the consequences of performing a behavior. It is sometimes referred to as “classical conditioning.” This theory uses the term “operant” to mean the behavior a person performs, and “stimulus” to mean the consequence that follows the behavior. Consequences can either reinforce (encourage) or punish (discourage) a behavior, and can be positive (adding something) or negative (taking something away).

Associated level of the Social Ecological Model: Intrapersonal/Individual

Example: An example of how this theory could be used in a health promotion intervention is if employees at a workplace were charged more for their health insurance if they continued to smoke. The operant behavior is smoking and the positive punishment would be the increased cost of health insurance.
