Discussion: Practicing Consultee-centered Consultation

This week, as you begin to provide consultee-centered consultation, note Doughtery’s (2013) guidance on working with a consultee to improve strengths while also tackling the core problem. The consultee-centered model places the emphasis on prevention (Doughtery, 2013).

This Discussion is more than an exchange among colleagues, it is an opportunity to apply your knowledge of consulting and practice your skills at it. For this Discussion, you will identify areas of your own portfolio that you feel could be strengthened. Then, you will engage in collaborative and empathic consultation to at least two of them.

As you, the students, move in the role of consultant, so will your instructor. Rather than individual responses to at least half of the students as in other discussions, your instructor will post general guidance to assist you in formulating your consultant response to your peers. You, the students, are responsible for the quality of interactions this week, just as you would be in a true consultant experience.

To Prepare:

•             Read and review the required Learning Resources for the week

•             Review and reflect upon your portfolio and your video presentation

•             Identify two areas of your portfolio that need to be strengthened: either aspects of your portfolio or areas of professional competence related to prevention

•             Post a link to your Social Change Project portfolio

•             In your post, identify two areas where you would like peer consultation on either your portfolio and/or areas of your competence as a prevention counselor.
